DOON UNIVERSITY, DEHRADUN

NEWS/PRESS RELEASE

Workshop to consider the establishment of

Centre for Studies in   Shiwalik Bioresources of Uttarakhand (CSSBU)

in Doon University

Recently, the Union Minister for Environment and Forests, Shri Jairam Ramesh   declared that Shiwalik Hills would be notified as the country's first inter-State Biosphere Reserve with the setting up of a bio-diversity corridor to protect its natural habitat, flora and fauna. The proposed corridor would pass through the states of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Uttarakhand. Siwalik Hills or Outer Himalaya -- the southernmost and geologically youngest east-west mountain chain of the Himalayan System, are an intermittent outermost range of foothills extending across the Himalayan region for app. 1689 km through Pakistan, India, Nepal and Bhutan.

Shiwaliks of Uttarakhand, rich in bio-resources, including floral and faunal biodiversity,  though have been exploited for mineral resources, did not get much attention from the academics and researchers to study this unique ecosystem and its species richness. Whatever worthwhile work has been done in Shiwaliks has been mainly restricted to Rajaji National Park and Corbett National Park.

To fill this vacuum in information on Bioresources of Shiwaliks of Uttarakhand it is proposed to establish a  Centre for Studies in   Shiwalik Bioresources of Uttarakhand (CSSBU) in Doon University which will focus attention  on ecosystem studies, vegetation analysis, flora and fauna, NWFPs, including bamboos and rattans,  wildlife studies, socio-economic studies, documentation of traditional knowledge, etc. in the Shiwalik Hill Ranges of Uttarakhand. These studies will not only facilitate to conserve the flora and fauna but protect from over exploitation and re-vegetate the denuded hills. In addition to focused research,  the other important mandate of this Centre would be to build a strong taxonomic group in different plant and animal groups.

Hence, it was considered appropriate to take stock of current state of knowledge with respect to bio-resources in the Shiwaliks of Uttarakhand and chalk out a strategy to undertake long and short term research so as to document, conserve and sustainably utilize natural resources, especially when Shiwalik hill ranges of Uttarakhand will be part of the proposed  Biosphere Reserve.

A One-Day Workshop is proposed to be held in Doon University in collaboration with the Uttarakhand Biodiversity Board in the last week of October to consider the proposal to establish a  Centre for Studies in   Shiwalik Bioresources of Uttarakhand (CSSBU) in Doon University. The Workshop will be attended by officials and experts in different fields.

The Workshop will be organized by the School of Environment & Natural Resources in Doon University.
